"Pro-Life"
Though I consider myself to be "Pro-Choice" I can certainly understand and relate to this by Joan Chittister, a Benedictine Sister and a best-selling author and well-known international lecturer on topics of justice, peace, human rights, women's issues, and contemporary spirituality in the Church and in society.
"I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed.
And why would I think that you don't?
Because you don't want any tax money to go there.
That's not pro-life.
That's pro-birth.
We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is."

On Change -
"It's been my habit of mind, over the years, to understand that every situation in which human beings are involved can be turned on its head. Everything someone assures me to be true might not be. Every pillar of belief the world rests on may or may not be about to explode. Most things don't stay the way they are very long. Knowing this, however, has not made me cynical. Cynical means believing that good isn't possible; and I know for a fact that good is. I simply take nothing for granted and try to be ready for the change that's soon to come."

Our Beefeater
With the Olympics going on in London there have been a few features on TV about the Tower of London and the Yeoman Warders who serve as guides. I was reminded of our visit on July 14, 2000, and the excellent guide we had. I didn't remember his name but I was able to read his name tag and did some Googling to find out he is Mick Casson who served as a Yeoman Warder for 15 years, retiring in 2003. He still gives talks about the Tower and his experiences.

Sunday Wildlife
Deer down in the stream, raccoons in the foreground
This is the first time we've ever seen raccoons out back. They have probably been around but we saw them today.

Weddle Tea
I just received a box of Weddle Tea that I got on eBay. In 1969 I visited the Weddle Tea Company in New York. It was located in a building at the corner of Wall and Water Streets in lower Manhattan where a skyscraper now stands. The owners were not Weddles but they did offer me a job - I think it was to be on hand when a creditor would call and ask to speak to Weddle! Back then every shipment of tea entering the U.S. had to be tasted by official government tea tasters, I saw the special table that they used. I am not sure when the company finally went out of business - I would guess in the seventies.

John Glenn!
In 1962 - fifty years ago today - John Glenn orbited the earth three times. As soon as he was safely back on Earth it was announced that the U.S. Post Office had issued a stamp commemorating the event. Post offices all across the country had been sent sealed packets of the new stamp with the instructions that they were not to be opened until directed to do so.
These were all autographed by John Glenn different times in 1986 and 1988 when he maintained a residence in Grandview Heights, Ohio. His voting place was in the school where I taught.
I most recently saw him in September of 1998 when he visited the Ohio Statehouse after a parade in his honor for once again being a space traveler in the space shuttle becoming the oldest astronaut.

A teacher friend lived in the same apartment building as John Glenn. One time they were in the elevator together and she noticed his lapel pin and told him the that she knew someone who would like to have one like it. He took it off and gave it to her and she gave it to me. I'm wearing it today.
